How Long Does It Take to Get the IELTS Score You Need?

One of the most common questions we hear from prospective IELTS students is how long it will take. The honest answer depends on several factors, but here is what the research and experience tell us.

There is no single answer to this question, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being entirely honest. The time it takes to reach your target IELTS score depends on where you are starting from, how much you study, how effectively you study, and, to some extent, the target score itself.

The Cambridge Scale

Cambridge research suggests that moving up one band on the IELTS scale requires approximately 200 hours of focused study for most learners. So if you are currently at band 5.5 and need a 6.5, you are looking at around 200 hours of well-directed preparation. If you need to move two bands, the estimate rises to around 400 hours. These are averages; some learners progress faster and some more slowly.

Your Starting Point Matters

The most important factor is your current level of English. If your everyday English is already strong and you simply need to learn the exam format and build specific test skills, a few weeks of intensive preparation may be enough. If your underlying English needs work as well, the process will naturally take longer, because you are building language ability alongside exam technique.

Quality Matters More Than Quantity

Two hundred hours of passive study is not the same as two hundred hours of focused, deliberate preparation. Students who work with a qualified IELTS teacher, who practise with real past papers, who get detailed feedback on their writing and speaking, and who identify and address their specific weaknesses will progress far more efficiently than those who simply re-read grammar notes.

Setting a Realistic Timeline

As a rough guide, if you are studying with us full-time and your English is already at an intermediate level or above, most students targeting a band 6 to 7 score are ready to sit the exam after eight to twelve weeks. If you are starting from a lower base or targeting a higher score, allow more time. Do not book your exam date before you have completed a reliable practice test under exam conditions.
