Can You Take IELTS at Home in the UAE? IELTS Online Explained (2026)

Can you take IELTS at home in the UAE? Not at the moment. The at-home version of the test, called IELTS Online, is only offered in certain countries, and the United Arab Emirates is not on the British Council's list of countries where you can book it (checked October 2026). IELTS Online is also Academic only and is not accepted for visas or immigration. If you live in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah or anywhere else in the UAE, you take IELTS at an official test centre, either on paper or on computer. This guide explains what IELTS Online is, why it may not help you even where it's available, and your fastest options in the UAE.

The short answer

• Is IELTS Online available in the UAE? No. The UAE is not currently listed as an eligible country for IELTS Online.
• Can I use IELTS Online for a visa? No. It's not accepted for visa, immigration or professional registration purposes in any country.
• What's the fastest alternative? Computer-delivered IELTS at a test centre in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah, with results usually in 1 to 2 days.
• Can I take any English test at home in the UAE? Yes, TOEFL iBT Home Edition is available in the UAE. Check that your university or employer accepts it first.

What is IELTS Online?

IELTS Online is a version of IELTS Academic that you take at home on your own laptop or desktop. According to IELTS:

• It has the same format and timing as IELTS Academic in a test centre.
• The Speaking test is a live video call with an IELTS examiner.
• You need a computer with one screen, a webcam, a microphone and speakers (no headphones), stable internet, and a quiet, private room.
• Results arrive online, usually 6 to 8 days after the test.
• General Training is not available online, and IELTS Online is not accepted for visas or immigration.

So even in countries where you can book it, IELTS Online is only useful if your university accepts it for admission. It can't be used for a UK, Canada or Australia visa, or for nursing registration.

Your options in the UAE

1. Computer-delivered IELTS at a test centre (fastest results)

You sit the test on a computer at an official centre. Results are usually ready in 1 to 2 days, and there are often several test dates a week in Dubai. This is the best choice if you're in a hurry.

2. Paper-based IELTS

You write your answers on paper. Results take about 13 days. Some candidates prefer paper for the Reading and Writing sections. The Speaking test is face to face with an examiner in both formats.

3. IELTS for UKVI

If you need IELTS for a UK visa, you must take IELTS for UKVI at an approved centre. The format is the same, but the booking and fee are different.

Are there other English tests you can take at home?

• TOEFL iBT Home Edition: ETS lists the UAE among the locations where the at-home TOEFL is available. It's widely accepted by US universities, but not every visa route accepts it.
• Other online tests: some universities accept tests that are taken entirely online. Acceptance varies a lot, so check with your university before you pay.

If you need a test for immigration, a nursing body or a UK visa, plan for a test centre. Our comparison of PTE vs IELTS in the UAE explains the other main centre-based option.

Is the computer-delivered test harder than paper?

No. The questions, timing and scoring are the same. The difference is how you answer:

• Listening: on computer, you type your answers as you listen. There's a short time to check your answers at the end.
• Reading: you can highlight text on screen. Some people find long texts easier on paper.
• Writing: typing is faster for most people, and the word count is shown on screen. If you're a slow typist, practise before the test.
• Speaking: face to face with an examiner in both formats.

If you've never taken IELTS before, try a full practice test in the format you plan to use.
