A Speed Boat Adventure with Speak English Institute

Learning a language is about far more than what happens inside a classroom. That is the spirit behind our social activity programme at Speak English Institute, and our recent speed boat trip around Dubai's coastline was one of the highlights of the year.

Setting Off from Dubai Marina

The group met at Dubai Marina on a bright Thursday afternoon, students and teachers together, a mix of nationalities that between them represented more than a dozen countries. There was the usual mixture of nerves and excitement as everyone boarded, with the skyline of the Marina stretching behind us and the open waters of the Gulf ahead. Within minutes of setting off, the conversations were flowing as naturally as the sea breeze.

Passing the Iconic Dubai Coastline

The route took us past some of Dubai's most recognisable landmarks viewed from a perspective that most visitors never experience. Seeing the Burj Al Arab from the water, with the Palm Jumeirah stretching into the distance behind it, is genuinely breathtaking. Several students who had been living in Dubai for months admitted it was the first time they had really appreciated the scale of what surrounds them day to day. There was a lot of photography, a great deal of laughter, and more than a few students discovering that the sea is considerably choppier from a speed boat than it looks from the shore.

Why Social Activities Matter for Language Learning

Research into language acquisition consistently shows that emotional engagement accelerates learning. When you are excited, amused, or genuinely engaged with what is happening around you, your brain forms stronger memories of the language you use in that moment. A student who uses the phrase 'I can't believe how fast this is going' while gripping the side of a speed boat is far more likely to remember that expression than if they had simply read it in a coursebook.

Building Friendships Across Cultures

By the end of the afternoon, as the boats returned to the marina and the group gathered for refreshments, it was clear that something beyond language practice had taken place. Students who had barely spoken to one another in class were exchanging contact details and making plans for the weekend. The shared experience of the trip had broken down the last remaining barriers and created a genuine sense of community.
